A famous Democrat donor has been found guilty of gross misconduct and Democrats are desperately scrambling to throw him under the bus.
According to The Daily Caller, the Weinstein Company announced on Sunday that it is terminating one of their most prominent employees: Harvey Weinstein, famed movie producer, and it’s because of a history of sexual harassment that’s been going on for decades.
Weinstein may not be the Democrats’ largest donor, but his substantial donations have certainly helped Democrats over the years, as reported by Business Insider. His total donations number in the millions. These donations range in scope from small-time senators to high profile Democrats and Progressives like Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton.
The New York Times reported Thursday that Weinstein is part of one of the uglier secrets in Hollywood. For decades, he’s faced allegations of sexual misconduct, from pressuring younger women to give him massages to wanting them to be present while he bathed.
He’s proven to be a sexual predator, targeting actresses, models, and former assistants who’ve worked with him on his movies.
For decades, he got away with this sick lifestyle until The New York Times story came out. Eight women, including actress Ashley Judd, received settlements from Weinstein in order to keep quiet about his inappropriate behavior. Ironically, their acceptance of these settlements enabled Weinstein to continue preying on women.
With the ugly details out, the board of directors for the Weinstein Company swiftly fired him. The company’s board of representatives explained their decision: “In light of new information about misconduct by Harvey Weinstein that has emerged in the past few days, the directors of the Weinstein Company – Robert Weinstein, Lance Maerov, Richard Koenigsberg and Tarak Ben Ammar, have determined, and have informed Harvey Weinstein, that his employment with the Weinstein Company is terminated, effective immediately.”
Fox News reported that Democrats are struggling to distance themselves from Weinstein. Those politicians who received donations from Weinstein, like Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), and Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), announced plans to donate the money to charity.
Many Democrats donated their Weinstein contribution amounts to nonprofits who work to combat sexual violence. Of the $300,000 they received from Weinstein, the Democrat National Committee donated a little over $30,000 to various political groups that ally themselves with female candidates of the Democrat Party.
Weinstein’s excuse is that such behavior was more acceptable in the past and he’s struggling to change in the modern age. “I came of age in the 60’s and 70’s, when all the rules about behavior and workplaces were different. That was the culture then,” Weinstein argued.
“I have since learned it’s not an excuse, in the office – or out of it. To anyone. I realized some time ago that I needed to be a better person and my interactions with the people I work with have changed. I appreciate the way I’ve behaved with colleagues in the past has caused a lot of pain, and I sincerely apologize for it…” he said.
Weinstein’s scandal is no doubt an embarrassment to his political beneficiaries who proport to be the champions of women’s rights and gender equality. Though they’ve been swift to distance themselves, the fact that he’s been able to get away with sexual harassment for almost 30 years speaks volumes about how liberal Hollywood handles it’s darker secrets.
