After eight years under Democrat Gov. Jerry Brown and facing budgetary, infrastructure and now rebuilding needs after getting hit with fires and mudslides, the state of California will be electing a new governor in November.

Lt. Governor Gavin Newsom, the liberal former mayor of San Francisco, leads a field of Democrats while the Republicans have yet to see a favorite emerge.

While famous names on both sides, including liberal actor George Clooney, conservative and former U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza, Rice, and retired football player, minister, and Robert Kennedy friend Roosevelt Grier have declined to run, a new name may be added to the Republican roster.

James Woods, a conservative actor with a loyal Twitter following, is being encouraged to run by a grassroots campaign headed up by Melanie Morgan, the radio host, and conservative activist.

A Woods candidacy and win might not seem like such a long shot considering the success of two Republican governors in California’s past – Ronald Reagan (1967 to 1975) and Arnold Schwarzenegger (2003 to 2011)..

In fact, as Morgan wrote in her petition to put Woods on the ballot, “Californian voters actually seem to enjoy casting ballots for Republican actors.”

“James Woods, governor of California? Why not? The Golden State has a long history of electing leaders from the deep end of the thespian pool,” the petition reads.

Morgan not only touts Woods qualifications – he is a member of the “high IQ club” Mensa, and “a former Catholic altar boy who aced his SATs, was accepted to MIT, but dropped out to pursue acting,” but calls out Newsom for “not appearing to give a damn about anything beyond naked political ambition.”

The petition asks, “Why not draft someone far more intelligent than any predecessor in that office?”

Like many conservatives in Hollywood, Woods has seen his career become quiet in the liberal atmosphere of the movie business.

Morgan writes, “He’s since become an Internet sensation due to his brilliant, concise and downright scrappy way of summarizing a political moment, right to its essence.”

As an example, the petition includes a recent tweet from Woods that sums up what a possible campaign platform might be, echoing to a large extent that of President Trump.

“End DACA completely, build the wall, defund sanctuary cities, end chain migration, enforce voter ID, and deport all lawbreakers. Democrats never listened to us when they were in control. Wake up, Republicans. You have the power. Use it, for God’s sake!”
