The attacks on innocent civilians just keep on coming. The year 2017 has been really awful for those who have been victimized by radical and deranged individuals who have taken innocent lives in astounding numbers across the world. We’re especially taken aback when this happens in the western world where we give people the trust and freedom to move about as they please, and they take it out on us by killing innocent people.
Less than a week after the shooting in a small Texas church, our attention turns to the next attack, this time targeting children while they were outside their school in the south of France. While it’s easy to just say “it’s not happening to me, it doesn’t matter” we have got to understand that terror anywhere is not only awful and deserving of our compassion, it’s a lesson for all of us.
The Independent UK reports that the perpetrator of this terrible crime was, most likely, extremely mentally ill, and targetting children was his way of getting attention:
A car has slammed into a crowd of people outside a school in Toulouse, south-west France.
At least three people are believed to be injured, including two Chinese students who have been seriously hurt in the incident, it has been reported.
French police are apparently saying it was a possible deliberate vehicle attack and that the driver was not on a security watch list, according to AFP.
The driver, a 28-year-old man who was known to police for committing minor offenses, was arrested at the scene, polices sources said.
“Two women and one man were injured when a car was deliberately driven into a crowd outside of a high school near Toulouse, France.
Police arrested the driver, a 28-year-old male, after he drove his car into the crowd outside of Lycée Saint Exupéry Friday afternoon on Granada Road, Blagnac (Haute-Garonne), shortly before 4 pm local time, reports France Bleu.
A 23-year-old woman was seriously injured but did not suffer life-threatening injuries, and two others, a 23-year-old male and a 22-year-old woman, received minor injuries. All three were transported to Purpan Hospital in Toulouse. Media reports that the victims were all Chinese nationals and students.
Police sources told French media that he was known to authorities for petty offenses, and had spent time in mental institutions. Police also said that he does not appear to be known by French counter-terrorism.
After running his car through the crowd, the driver, believed to be of East Asian (Oriential) descent, parked on the side of the road and waited for the police to arrive, smoking a cigarette. He then told officers he had ‘deliberately’ driven into the students.”
It’s obvious that anyone who would target children and run them over with their car is someone who is out of touch with any level of compassion whatsoever. Maybe he is just the kind of person who doesn’t care about other’s suffering, or maybe he suffers from a mental condition himself, but either way, it’s not the kind of person that needs to be running free on the streets.
No doubt there will be a lot of controversy over why he did what he did, but the fact that people are less worried about others and more worried about how things make them feel is very apparent.
Prisons were set up, not so much as punishment, but as places to corral people who were a detriment to others until such time as they could be reasonably considered to be rehabilitated. For some that comes quicker than others and for others still, just the prospect of the inconvenience of being locked up is enough to keep them on the straight and narrow. So before the bleeding hearts say that just because he was mentally unstable he shouldn’t get prison time, remember that it’s for the safety of those who are fully functioning in society. It’s not just about him.
