The relationship between North Korea and the United States has been getting worse and worse. The days of leading from behind are far from over. President Trump has made it clear he will not stand for threats from North Korea. His latest actions prove just that. The President has sent the USS Theodore Roosevelt en route to the western Pacific. It left a San Diego port just last week and is known as a Nimitz-class aircraft carrier.
This particular vessel will be focusing on maritime security operations in the Pacific and the Middle East. In total it cost $4.5 billion and was nicknamed the Big Stick. Its purpose is to boost U.S. defense in the Korean peninsula in light of rising tensions between North Korea, the United States, and other countries surrounding the peninsula such as Japan and North Korea. The ship will arrive in a few weeks.
The Foreign Minister in Pyongyang, North Korea, Ri Yong Ho released a statement about this recent development from the United States. In response, he made the following statement,
“With his bellicose and insane statement at the United Nations, Trump, you can say, has lit the wick of a war against us. We need to settle the final score, only with a hail of fire, not words.”
However, this has not deterred the force of the United States military. Admiral Steve Koehler who is the strike group commander on the ship has noted that there are 7,500 sailors and marines ready and they are a warfighting force. In his formal comments, he said,
“The US Navy carrier strike group is the most versatile, capable force at sea,” he said in a statement before the ship’s launch. After nearly a year of training and integration exercises, the entire team is ready as a warfighting force and ready to carry out the nation’s tasking.”
The Daily Star reported the following,
“If dispatched to the Korean peninsula, the Roosevelt will be the second aircraft carrier to arrive in the region after the USS Ronald Reagan. The USS Ronald Reagan is currently conducting joint military exercises with Japanese military near Okinawa. A US military helicopter crash landed in Okinawa earlier today just hours after exercises kicked off. The Regan will take part in joint drills with South Korea later this month.
Tensions have been reaching fever pitch on the Korean peninsula in recent days with the US holding a series of military drills. Six US planes – including a “nuclear sniffer” and two Air Force B-1B Lancer bombers – took part in the brazen show of force last night. The provocative move came after Trump suggested military action against North Korea may be the only option to solve the crisis.”
President Trump has sent out tweets in regards to the escalating relationship. In one tweet he can be quoted saying,
“Presidents and their administrations have been talking to North Korea for 25 years, agreements made and massive amounts of money paid hasn’t worked, agreements violated before the ink was dry, makings fools of U.S. negotiators. Sorry, but only one thing will work!”
In another he said,
“Our country has been unsuccessfully dealing with North Korea for 25 years, giving billions of dollars & getting nothing. Policy didn’t work!”
“Yesterday, US bombers flew over the Korean peninsula in a show of force aimed at North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. The B-1B bombers from Guam staged a simulated air-to-ground missile-firing drill with two South Korean F-15K fighters over the East Sea. Japan also sent two military aircraft as tensions mount in the region.
Earlier this week, Russia’s foreign secretary Sergey Lavrov waded into the crisis and told his US counterpart, Rex Tillerson, the escalation of tension on the Korean peninsula is “unacceptable”. During a phone call with Secretary of State Mr. Tillerson, Vladimir Putin’s right hand man discussed Syria, Korea and Ukraine, the Russian foreign ministry revealed. Mr Lavrov also told Mr Tillerson Moscow is demanding the US returns Russian diplomatic property seized in 2016 over suspected Russian interference in the general election. The pair’s phone call came just hours after Donald Trump’s most senior general told the US Army to “stand ready” for war with North Korea.”
“General James ‘Mad dog’ Mattis warned it is impossible to tell what the future holds for the crisis, but urged US troops to be prepared for a confrontation with Kim Jong-un. He said while Mr Trump is committed to finding a diplomatic solution, the US Army must “standby ready” to fight. General Mattis said: “It is right now a diplomatically led, economic-sanction buttressed effort to try to turn North Korea off this path.
“Now what does the future hold? Neither you nor I can say, so there is one thing the US Army can do. “And that is you have got to be ready to ensure that we have military options that our President can employ if needed.””
President Trump is preparing for the worst case and scenario and he should. We may have been unsafe under the Obama administration but we are not any longer. The President is showing as a country that we will not stand idly by while our people, our society, and our country is threatened. With people like Tillerson and Mattis by his side, there are no lengths that we will not go to if we must. If we are attacked we will attack back and it will not have the outcome North Korea desires.
