Over the years, the Westboro Baptist Church has become infamous with their anti-military protests. Though it is their Constitutional Right to freely speak against the military, they choose to do so at the funerals of military veterans who have paid the ultimate sacrifice for their country. Also present to witness the anti-military rallies are the families who are grieving for America’s fallen heroes.
Vietnam veteran Richard Pierce watched in outrage over what he saw members of the ‘church’ doing, and joined the anti-protester-protesters.
“I went there to mind my own business, and just to make sure everything was uppity up, and that there was no problems.”Pierce recieved national attention after engaging in an alleged assault against one of the female protesters.
“It was not my intention to cause a problem. However, when I saw the young lady walking across the highway, dragging our flag under her feet, I lost my temper.”
Pierce was outraged at the woman’s behavior, and he says that he then reacted in a way that he felt was justified. The American veteran ‘spilled’ his cup of Dunkin’ Donuts coffee on the woman.
“It’s very meaningful to me as a marine, as it is to all marines. So many people have died in defense of that flag.”
The Westboro Baptist Church was protesting at the funeral of a marine at the time of the ‘coffee incident.’ Though Pierce has been charged with disorderly conduct, he has received the support of American politicians like Delaware House Speaker Pete Schwartzkopf, who said,
“With the exception of the spilled coffee, you pulled off a victory over hate and ignorance… By the way, if that gentleman is found guilty I would like to pay his fine”
Pierce has was interviewed about the incident afterwards,
“I don’t care who you are, you are not going to disrespect the flag.”
